Outside of his professional pursuits, David Raminfard enjoys watching National Basketball Association (NBA) games. The NBA suspended the 2019-2020 season in March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is uncertainty as to whether the league will finish the season, and if it does, it might not be until late into the summer. Many stakeholders in the league, including commissioner Adam Silver, have used the break in play to think about ways in which the league could improve. Some have suggested holding the NBA finals in August and beginning the 2020-2021 season on Christmas Day. On March 15, teams were directed to explore the possibility of booking arenas and practice facilities into July and August should the league resume and begin with the playoffs. The idea of making playoffs later in the summer and beginning the season on Christmas Day is one that some executives are in favor of making permanent. Atlanta Hawks president Steve Koonin, for example, is a proponent of the idea as it would put the league in a favorable position in competition with the MLB, rather than the NFL and college football.
