The NBA suspended the 2019-2020 season in March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is uncertainty as to whether the league will finish the season, and if it does, it might not be until late into the summer. Many stakeholders in the league, including commissioner Adam Silver, have used the break in play to think about ways in which the league could improve. Some have suggested holding the NBA finals in August and beginning the 2020-2021 season on Christmas Day. On March 15, teams were directed to explore the possibility of booking arenas and practice facilities into July and August should the league resume and begin with the playoffs. The idea of making playoffs later in the summer and beginning the season on Christmas Day is one that some executives are in favor of making permanent. Atlanta Hawks president Steve Koonin, for example, is a proponent of the idea as it would put the league in a favorable position in competition with the MLB, rather than the NFL and college football.

The 2014 NBA Finals ratings were the lowest in five years, but the league has been experiencing healthy ratings across the board over the past four seasons thanks in large part to the dominance of LeBron James and the Golden State Warriors. An average of 15 million people watched the 2014 NBA Finals, but 20 million watched the following year, when the Cavaliers and Warriors met in the first of four consecutive Finals. That was only the third time the Finals averaged more than 18 million viewers since 2003. The 2016 and 2017 NBA Finals were viewed by an average of 20.2 and 20.5 million people, respectively, and while those numbers dropped slightly in 2018, the league is still regularly breaking viewership records. During the 2017-18 regular season, viewership was up 8 percent from the prior season and 17 percent on ABC alone. James signed with the Los Angeles Lakers this past offseason, which makes it unlikely that the Warriors and Cavaliers will play in the NBA Finals for a fifth consecutive year, but that hasn't slowed the league's momentum. On October 11, James' Lakers played the Warriors in a preseason game on ESPN, and it was the network's most-watched preseason game of all-time with almost two million viewers. ![]() As CEO and president of both KasLen Textiles, LLC, and NewPoint Fabrics Inc., David Raminfard is tasked with sourcing fabrics from a number of international suppliers. Beyond his professional activities, David Raminfard enjoys following the National Basketball Association (NBA), particularly during the NBA Finals. The 2014 NBA Finals marked an important change to the league’s championship series while at the same time bringing about closure to David Stern’s three-decade tenure as league commissioner. Beginning with the 1985 NBA Finals, the first under Stern’s aegis, teams competed in a 2-3-2 format, meaning the first two games and, if necessary, final two games of the best-of-seven series would be contested on the home team’s floor, with the middle three games taking place on the lower seeded team’s court. The format differed from previous NBA Finals and all other best-of-seven series in the post season, held under a 2-2-1-1-1 format. Stern initiated the change in 1985 as part of his and the league’s plan to gain better television coverage for the NBA, especially during the playoffs. With the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers facing off against the Los Angeles Lakers in six NBA Finals throughout the 1980s, national camera crews were forced to continuously trek back and forth across the country, sometimes three times in less than one week. While the updated format made travel easier, critics felt it was unfair to give the lower seeded team three consecutive home games, forcing the higher seed to remain on the road for more than a week at a time. In 2013, with Stern’s time as commissioner coming to a closer, league ownership voted unanimously to revert back to the traditional format. Since that time, all NBA Finals series have gone to at least five games, with notable contests including home close-out games by the San Antonio Spurs in 2014 and the Golden State Warriors in 2017, and the Cleveland Cavaliers securing an important road win over the Warriors on their way to the first-ever comeback from a 3-1 deficit in NBA Finals history. |
