Based in Southern California, David Raminfard serves as president and CEO of KasLen Textiles, guiding a leading fabric distributor that offers a full range of materials for drapery and upholstery. David Raminfard has a comprehensive knowledge of cloth types, including tartan, which is found in a variety of settings and was originally associated with Scottish highlanders.

Created from woven wool, the traditional tartan incorporated horizontal, crossed, and vertical bands in a variety of colors and represented the family group, or clan, of its wearers. Tartan was used as the basis for a variety of clothing items, including kilts, head linens, and long garments that extended from head to ankle.

Tartan became an export product by the 16th century, but went out of fashion in the late 18th century when a parliamentary act aimed at curbing illict activity in the Scottish highlands decreed the wearing of tartans and the carrying of weapons to be unlawful. Tartan production only revived in 1822, when King George IV, on a visit to Edinburgh, expressed interest in having attendees of official functions dress in traditional tartans.

From that time onward, tartans regained popularity. Today they are a popular plaid design that can be incorporated into a range of materials, from cotton to wool. One notable exception, however, is royal tartan, which is reserved for members of the British monarchy.

Thing to Consider When Choosing a Curtain Rod and Hardware

David Raminfard presides over KasLen Textiles, a leading supplier of high-quality fabrics. David Raminfard's holdings in the textile industry also include New Point Fabric and Luxury Fabrics in California. Luxury Fabrics offers a wide array of fabric choices as well as all the hardware and fixtures to go with them.

When choosing fixtures for drapery, the first decision you will need to make about hardware is whether or not you would like it to be visible. Some curtain rods are designed to be hidden, while others are meant to be prominent decorations.

If you opt for a decorative curtain rod, consider the diameter and length. Larger rods will be bolder accents, while thinner rods may look more elegant with certain decor. Experts suggest avoiding rods that are much less than one inch in diameter, as they can appear cheap or flimsy.

Short curtain rods can open up opportunities for asymmetrical drapery arrangements or accent fabrics, while long curtain rods can make a window seem wider than it actually is. Consider your available space and overall desired aesthetic when deciding on a length.

When choosing a color or finish, it is important to consider the other tones present in a room. Many people match their curtain rods to the picture frames, mirrors, furniture legs, and similar items in a room, rather than focusing on matching the drapery fabric itself. Once a finish is picked, you can select matching end caps, hooks, finials, tiebacks, and other accessories as desired.

Raw Denim as a “Blank Slate” Material for Jeans

Serving as the president of KasLen Textiles LLC in Vernon, California, respected entrepreneur David Raminfard manages a 60,000-square-foot warehouse of fabrics, encompassing everything from felt to denim. Moreover, David Raminfard offers this broad spectrum of fabrics in a variety of popular patterns and styles.

Best known as a material for jeans and jackets, denim is a versatile warp-faced cotton material that features rugged diagonal ribbing. In its raw or “dry” form, it has not been pre-washed, on account of which the dye runoff and pre-shrinking associated with pre-washing has not occurred.

Purchasers of raw denim clothes often wear them for anywhere from six months to a year without washing to give them an opportunity to shed their dye. With this “blank slate,” the patterns that emerge from the process of living in the jeans reflect the individual wearer’s physique and lifestyle. Once such a pair of jeans is finally washed, patterns that reflect the wearer’s history emerge.
