Good sleep posture requires various body parts such as the head, neck, spine, hips, and knees to be well aligned and supported. A good pillow ensures comfortable sleep and prevents the sleeper from waking up with aches and pains. To choose the best pillow, it’s important for a person to know their preferred sleeping position, as it determines the type of support the body needs from a pillow. For instance, stomach sleepers are advised to choose a thin or soft pillow in order to prevent the neck from arching backwards. Sleeping on the stomach places significant stress on the lower back, which also necessitates the need to place a pillow under the abdomen to support the lower back.
Side sleepers require a moderately firm and thick pillow with rectangular panels around the pillow to boost thickness in order to properly align their head, neck, and shoulders. The extra thickness reduces the distance between the shoulder and ear, providing extra support for both the head and neck. In some instances, a second pillow may be needed between the knees to reduce pressure on the hips and knees, as well as straighten the spine. Back sleepers should consider a relatively thin and soft pillow to prevent the neck from excessive tilting. In addition, a flatter pillow ensures the neck and spine are well aligned. In some cases, an extra pillow or two may be needed to provide the knees and lower back support to reduce strain. For the head memory foam pillows are ideal, as they enable the head to rest in a proper alignment and adjust accordingly to comfortably fit the shape of the head and neck.
