David Raminfard is a California business owner who leads Kaslen Textiles and New Point Fabrics, Inc., and delivers quality materials for upholstery and drapery. One type of fabric that David Raminfard inventories is Jacquard, which refers to pattens that are woven in, instead of printed on, the fabric.
The Jacquard fabric originated in 1804, with Joseph Marie Jacquard inventing a specific loom that allowed complex patterns to be created. This mechanized patterned weave was part of a wave of innovation that brought ornamental fabrics such as damask and brocade, once reserved for the elite, to the masses. The Jacquard loom approach is also noteworthy for a punched paper card system that enabled manufacturers to program a standard pattern in the production process. This influenced Charles Babbage and electronic computing science’s development. It has come full circle, with contemporary Jacquard looms programmed by computer, rather than by physical cards. While Jacquard patterns were once common in fine clothing, today they are most prevalent in upholstery for high-end furniture.
